Upright exercise bikes vs. recumbent bikes

There are two basic types of exercise bikes: upright and recumbent. Upright exercise bikes are similar to a standard road bike having a vertical orientation and allow more movement, for instance riding standing on the pedals, or in a racing pose, giving you a more demanding workout. In the case of a recumbent bike, you are seated against a backrest, withy your legs out in front.

Experts argue about the comparative health advantages of both types of exercise bikes. Some people prefer recumbent bikes for their comfort, in particular those with back pain, but most fitness experts claim that such bikes promote slower and less intense workout.

Generally, most experts say that is more about the personal comfort rather than the health benefit. Exercise bike manufacturers generally offer both types of bikes, but recumbent bikes cost more. It is recommended to try them out in the store to see which of them is more comfortable for you. Your fitness and/or medical professional might also advise on the suitable machine for you.

Exercise bikes and video game technology

More recently stationary bike manufacturers try to combine biking technology with video gaming technology to offer exciting workout for users. Bikes with preset workout for variety and bike-based option of spinning are getting more and more popular at gyms.

The Gamebike GB-200 plugs into a Sony PlayStation 2 and 3, Nintendo GameCube or even PC and works great with various driving games. It is even used in certain school physical education classes in an effort to fight childhood obesity.

Another bike, Fisher-Price Smart Cycle – available at Amazon.com, Walmart.com or other retailers – plugs into a TV screen where children pedal their way on virtual roads or race tracks. Extra software cartridges with SpongeBob, Dora the Explorer, Hot Wheels or Barbie are also available.

The Expresso S3 is a similar bike, but catering for adults. It has a built-in television, internet connection, music channels along with virtual riding courses with opponents and scenery. The bike is available in both upright and recumbent models and feature 19-inch screen, computer system and incorporated TV tuner.
